Spinal Manipulation – Is that all chiropractors have to offer?

There seems to be many chiropractic clinics in Singapore that offer purely spinal manipulation as their treatment. And I can see their reasoning why, as spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment can have a very powerful positive effect on a person’s condition, but it also has its limits.

Spinal manipulation is very effective in loosening up stiff spinal segments, relieving muscle stiffness and often pain that accompany it. But, spinal manipulation should not be done on spinal segments that are moving too much, because it will eventually lead to spinal instability and cause pain in itself.

Chiropractors should be looking to restore balance in the spine and body and have therefore many techniques and ‘tools’ to their disposal, spinal manipulation is only one of them. Other important ones to name a few are: stretching, strengthening, trigger point therapy and believe it or not, advice; how to self manage your condition, the do’s and don’ts.

Going to chiropractic clinics that only does adjustments during your visit and does the same for every single case would be like seeing a dentist that only uses a drill, removing the caries but never filling the holes to prevent it from coming back the next day. This kind of practice can and will lead to unhappy customers, as you can read in this blog post questioning the chiropractic profession, both its skill and ethics.
